Service Learning

South School has a long-standing tradition of service learning and community service; it is one of the areas that helped set us apart and achieve the California Distinguished School award in 2012.  Our efforts fall into three categories.  First, the Service Learning Team holds several drives throughout the year, including the Halloween Costume Drive, and The Warm Coat Drive.  Second, individual students have the opportunity to perform community service and receive credit toward receiving a President's Volunteer Service Award.  Over the last several years, we have seen a significant increase in the number of volunteer hours performed by our students!  Third, South School has a unique program, the Lakas Shimizu Service-Learning STAR Award program, which allows fourth and fifth grade students to work with our principal to create, develop, and implement a service learning project to benefit a non-profit organization in our community.  Please look out for more information about all of these programs throughout the year.
